Olympic athletes from Latvia have won a total of 80 Olympic medals - 20 gold, 40 silver, 20bronze medals.

	1. The 1st ever Olympic medal by Latvian was won in 1912 in Stockholm by Haralds Blaus (3rd in shooting), representing then Russia.
	2. The Latvian Olympic Committee was established on April 23rd, 1922.
	3. Olympic debut of Latvia was participation in the 1st Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix (1924) and in the Olympic Games in Paris (1924).
	4. In 1926 Janis Dikmanis, the first President of the Latvian Olympic Committee was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
	5. The first Olympic medal for Latvia was won by Janis Dalins in 1932 in Los Angeles, coming 2nd in the 50 km race walking.
	6. Latvia was occupied by the USSR in 1940 and activities of the Latvian Olympic Committee were interrupted.
	7. From 1952 to 1988 athletes from Latvia’s territory as the members of USSR team won 59 Olympic medals - 18 gold, 27 silver and 14 bronze.
	8. The first Olympic Champion from Latvia is Inese Jaunzeme who became the 1st in javelin throwing at the Games of the XVI Olympiad in Melbourne (1956).
	9. The most achievement rich athletes from Latvia are Iulijaka Semjonova (basketball) – 2 Olympic Golds in 1976 and 1980, and Janis Lusis (javelin throwing)– Olympic Gold (1968), Silver (1972) and Bronze (1964).
	10. The first Winter Olympic champion from Latvia is Vera Zozula who won Luge competition in Lake Placide (1980).
	11. On November 19th, 1988 representatives of various Latvian sport organizations gathered in Riga and restored activities of the Latvian Olympic Committee. World ex-champion in kayak Vilnis Baltins became the President of the renewed Committee (he was reelected in 1992, 1996 and 2000).
	12. The Latvian Olympic Committee regained recognition by the IOC on September 18th , 1991 in Berlin .
	13. LATVIA RETURNED for Olympic Games after a break of 56 years on February 8th, 1992, at the XVI Olympic Winter Games in Albertville.
	14. The first Olympic Gold for Latvia’s team was won by gymnast Igors Vihrovs at the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney (2000).
